Mrs. Mildred Earline Henley Couch of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Hospice in the Pines in Lufkin at the age of 85 years, 2 months, 19 days, surrounded by her girls.

Mildred was born July 20, 1941, in San Augustine County’s Norwood community to parents Gladys Mae (Parker) and Earl Henley. She had lived in other areas for a few years, but most of her life was lived in San Augustine County. Mrs. Couch retired from Brookshire Brothers Supermarket, where she had worked for many years in the meat department.

She was an outstanding seamstress and took pride in making many of the clothes and dresses for her daughters and granddaughters.

She was a longtime member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Mildred had taught Sunday School and was active in the church’s ministries until her health declined. In recent years, she had regularly attended Broaddus Pentecostal Church.

Mildred was married to James Robert “Jim” Couch in 1964. He preceded her in death on March 2, 2009.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Gladys Henley; a daughter, Linda Jean Dunn; sister, Barbara Sue Evans; brother, Keith Henley; and brothers-in-law, Charles Wells and Charles Evans.

Her survivors include her sons, James Robert “Bobby Couch Jr. and wife Lisa of Dickinson, Texas, Earl Roy Couch and wife Michelle of Magnolia, Texas, and Martin Raymond “Marty” Couch of San Augustine, Texas; daughters, Tiffany Nicole Luce and husband Joe of Hemphill, Texas, Tashma Rene’ Rummer and husband Travis of San Augustine, Texas, and Patricia Ann Grimes and Deborah Ann Lindsey, both of Ore City, Texas; her sister, Elaine Wells of Broaddus, Texas; a brother, Grady Henley and wife Jo Ann of Deer Park, Texas; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home chapel with Bishop Mark Green officiating. Committal service and interment will follow at Sowell Cemetery in the Norwood community.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 11, 2026.

Janice Elaine Westfall Canady, age 90, of Florien, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026, in Florien.

Elaine was born on March 14, 1936, in Peason, Louisiana, to the late Otis and Sylvie Westfall. She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1955, and shortly after, on September 24, 1955, she married the love of her life, Charles. Throughout her life, she resided in Pearland, TX, Beaumont, TX, Lumberton, TX, and ultimately returned to Florien, LA. During her working years in Beaumont, she was a dedicated employee at Swicegood Music and Montgomery Ward.

A woman of deep faith and a gentle spirit, Elaine was a devoted member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Mt. Carmel, Louisiana. She found great joy in quilting and sewing beautiful dolls and rabbits for her friends and family. Additionally, she made dresses and dolls for children to send to Honduras as part of a missionary program. She actively participated in church activities, loved dining out, and was happiest when gathering with those she loved most.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 71 years, Charles Canady of Florien, LA; her daughter, Kay Short and husband David of Beaumont, TX; and her son, Gordon Canady and wife Bridget of Lumberton, TX. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Hayley Merrill of Porter, TX, Chad Merrill of Spring, TX, Jude Canady of Austin, TX, and Carsyn Canady of Beaumont, TX; her precious great-grandchildren, Riley, Ella, and Emmy Merrill; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Sylvie Westfall, and her brothers and sisters, Geneva Bell, Maurice Westfall, Charles Westfall, and Dot Thaxton.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Thaxton, Neil Thaxton, Gary Westfall, Wade Bell, Dustin Bell, and Tyler Thaxton. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Bell, Bradley Thaxton, and Jace Thaxton.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Bro. Matt Warren and Bro. Dacota Glover officiating. Burial will follow at Florien Cemetery. Funeral services for Ralph Dillon Funderburk, 91, of Florien, LA, will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Antioch Baptist Church with Bro. Wayne Chance officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 5:00 PM at Antioch Baptist Church.

Ralph Dillon Funderburk was born on December 15, 1934, in Many, Louisiana, the third of thirteen children born to Luther Hall and Vera Miller Funderburk. At the age of twelve, Ralph accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Antioch Baptist Church, beginning a lifelong journey of faith.

Ralph attended Negreet Schools and graduated with the Class of 1952. In 1957, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served his country. He spent much of his military career stationed in Verona, Italy, where he worked as a cryptographic technician.

Following his military service, Ralph worked as a clerical employee for Paymaster Cotton Mill. In the late 1960s, he became a business owner when he established Tom’s Distribution. In 1977, he joined Williams Brothers International Pipeline as an office manager, a position that took him overseas to both Nigeria and Oman.

Upon returning to the United States, Ralph continued his entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating Burk’s Woodyard from 1979 until 1993. After closing the woodyard, he worked for Valley Electric, Peoples State Bank, and Meridian Medical Supplies. Throughout these years, Ralph also devoted time to raising cattle and gardening on his property, a responsibility he took great pride in.

Ralph loved his God, his family, and a good laugh. He had a gift for seeing the best in others and always sought the good in his fellow man. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he lived it with a quiet strength, a generous spirit, and a genuine love for those around him. His 91 years were filled with faith, family, hard work, service, and countless stories that will continue to be shared and cherished by those who knew and loved him.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharlee Salter Funderburk; his brother, Ray Funderburk; his sisters, Louise Leach and Helen Tippey; his infant brother, Floyd Funderburk; and his son-in-law, Danny Sparks.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his three children, Bridgett Sparks of Florien; Ralph Christopher Funderburk and Candi, of Florien; Jason Funderburk and Kimberley of Carthage, Texas; his former wife and the mother of his children, Doris Hartley of Carthage, Texas; and his stepdaughters, Celeste Davis Funderburk and Charlie of Prairieville, and Crystal Davis Cummins and Don of Ajax.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aaron Kochell, Courtney Kochell, Coby Chreene (Nicole), Carly Roark (Tyler), Sarah Funderburk, and Abigail Funderburk; step-grandchildren, Bronson Funderburk, Corbin Cummins, Katie Grace Cummins, and Keaton Cummins; great-grandchildren, Kaden Kochell, Jaci Kochell, Harper Brown, Maddie Chreene, Kaylee Chreene, Carter Chreene, Charli Roark, Tripp Roark, and Tucker Roark; and; the fourth child of the Roark family, expected in January. He was also blessed with one great-great-grandchild, Millie Carver.

He is survived by his brothers, Willes Funderburk (Carolyn) of Florien, Fredie Funderburk (Dean) of Florien, Donald Funderburk (Mavis) of Florien, Benny Funderburk (Debra) of Many, Robert Funderburk (Kathy) of Natchitoches, and Kenneth Funderburk (Cindy) of Florien; his sisters, Nancy Brown (Ronald) of Florien and Carolyn Masters of Huntsville, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

The family extends its sincere appreciation to his caregivers, who provided devoted care and companionship to Ralph during the final years of his life. Their dedication, compassion, and faithful service provided him with comfort, dignity, and support throughout his later years. The family is deeply grateful for the care provided and for the meaningful relationship they shared with Ralph.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that Ralph is now home with his Lord and Savior. His legacy of faith, love, hard work, and kindness will live through the many lives he touched.

Pallbearers will be: Coby Chreene, Tyler Roark, Don Cummins, Aaron Kochell, Kayden Kochell, Waylon Salter, Brian Miller, and Bean Brown.

Mr. Rusty Reiter, age 79, of Broaddus, Texas, passed away Friday, October 2, 2026, at his residence. 

A native of Florida, he had been a longtime resident of the Broaddus area and worked as maintenance superintendent in the petroleum industry. He was born February 26, 1947, in Palatka, Florida, to parents Vivian G. (Weaver) and Walland C. Reiter and was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving 1965-1968.

Rusty had a great passion for outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing. He loved roping along with tending his Longhorn cattle and horses. So much fun and entertainment came from car racing and he spent many hours working on car restoration. One of his proudest accomplishments was his work to build the house that has been his family’s “home” for the past several years.

His survivors include his wife, Betsy Reiter of Broaddus; sons, Keith Reiter and wife Diane of Timpson and Bread Reiter and wife Crystal of Broaddus; a sister, Judy Beach of Florahome, Florida; grandchildren, Sadie Reiter, Johnnie Reiter, Darian Hutto, and Brittany Sample; nephew, Stephen Huckleberry; niece, Michelle Taylor; and great-nephews, Stephen Huckleberry and Noah Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Walland Reiter; and three grandchildren, Austin, Brandon, and a Shana.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Harvey Creek Baptist Church in Broaddus. 

Interment will be at Sowell Cemetery.

Major Perry Michael Hicks retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving his country, bravely, for many years of his life. He was a proud American Airman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry Mason Hicks and Evelyn Ruth Hastings Hicks; and his brother, David Hicks.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Hicks; children, Perry Michael Hicks, Jr., Stacy Hicks, and Robby Hicks; stepsons, James “Buzz” Turner, and Drew Feldman; his brother, Robert Hicks; 11 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
